SOUTH OF THE DIVIDE

MUSIC FROM LOCAL MUSICIANS WITH ROOTS IN THE SWAMPS OF NEW ORLEANS AND THE BACKROADS OF TEXAS

South of the Divide – July 27th, 2008

A Showcase to indulge all the senses

South of the Divide, a soulful blend of Alt-Country, Acoustic Rock and Blues is set to move your head, heart and feet, on Sunday 27th July at the Irish Society Hall.

Organiser Laura Collins says “this show is a real treat for anyone who really loves great song-writing, music with its roots in the south – a little bit country / a little bit blues with NZ soul, served up by one hell of an exciting live band”.

Headlining the show is award winning songwriter Wayne Mason and his band the Fallen Angels, who have recently released their new album ‘Sense Got Out’.

Mason's been involved in some of New Zealand's most well known bands, from the Fourmyula (with five top ten hits written or co-written by Mason, ‘including ‘Nature’) through to the Warratahs (whose first hit "Hands of My Heart" was written by Mason).

He is also a damn fine barrelhouse piano player and along with his band, made up of very experienced Wellington musicians Clint Brown (also formally of the Warratahs, Rocking Horse), Greg Turner (from Desert Road Band amongst others) and Richard Te One (Chicago Smokeshop, Midge Marsden, Backdoor Blues Band), will raise the temperature when they rock with the energy that only the ‘Fallen Angels’ can.

Another treat in store is Finger-Picking Bluesman Dave Murphy. “NZ’s finest acoustic blues guitarist” (Mike Garner – Blues News) who will soon be releasing his CD “Yes that’s me”, he has a gut-wrenching, heart-stopping vocal style and plays the kind of grooves that make you just want to get up and join him.

Laura Collins, an “underground queen of alt-country’, will open the show adding some soulful female energy to this mix.

Laura, who holds this event annually in Wellington, says “you can expect to eat, drink, dance and leave at the end of the night with a song in your heart – really indulge all their senses”.

South of the Divide is on at the Irish Society Hall, Fifeshire Avenue, on Sunday 27th July, 2008, 4.00pm start, doors open from 3.30, Southern food for sale and a bar on site, Tickets available from Alistair’s Music $20 and what’s remaining at the door.
